And... They're Off!!!

Halloween was pumped and ready at the starting gate. The jack-o-lanterns were waiting to be lit and the costumes were flying off the shelves faster than a witch's broom across the night sky.

The Halloween candy had been strategically placed by the front door, so the rotation of trick or treaters would be as quick as possible. The "get'em in / get'em out" game plan would have rivaled any Nascar pit crew.

But wait...

What's this I see? Coming up on the inside, passing Halloween, is Thanksgiving! With turkey feathers flying, Thanksgiving zooms past Halloween, leaving nothing behind but a trail of giblet gravy.

As Thanksgiving rounds the corner and starts going into the home stretch, we start making our grocery lists as we plan for the formidable Thanksgiving dinner. We start experiencing flashbacks from last year's food overdose and promise ourselves we won't eat that last piece of pie just because we don't want to put it up.

Just about the time we accept the fact from October until January we are in the holiday crush, Christmas is running straight for us and at us. We can't do anything about what is getting ready to hit us, but to brace ourselves.

Suddenly Christmas pulls out in front, leaving the other holidays looking dazed and confused. Santa's sleigh swoops down with such force, empty Halloween candy wrappers, and Thanksgiving turkey tail feathers, take to the air from the sheer velocity of the holiday.

Before we can step out of our Halloween costumes or even thaw the Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas rushes in. Halloween and Thanksgiving are blown out of the way and knocked off to the sidelines. Santa and his teams of reindeer and elves take over the season before Halloween and Thanksgiving have a chance to settle in.

The other day I was at the store and I could stand in one spot and see Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving decorations and Christmas ornaments, all within a few steps of each other. It's enough to make me want to grab a jack-o-lantern, glue turkey feathers on it and top it off with a Santa hat. Then set a sign in front of it saying: "HAPPY HOLIDAYS!" Now that should just about cover it.
