Halloween
Halloween, what a strange holiday. We put our children in all manner of costumes, put a treat receptacle in their hands, tell them to go up to the door of strangers and ask for candy.
We take countless pictures as we ooh and aah over the ever-so-cute little ones all dressed up. They stare back at us as they stand sweating and itching (with a little crying) in this suit we have just wrestled them in to. (I'm not going to mention the state of mind the adult who is trying to put the costume on the child is in at this point. But, the sweat pouring from their forehead and the eye twitch speaks volumes. Are we having fun yet?) The child wonders what are these people thinking and why do they find this torture so entertaining. The things grown ups do for fun.
When you finally get out the door to go trick or treating, everyone is already exhausted, but away you go. We walk the reluctant little ones up to the door hoping the home owners don't open their door and jump out wearing some horrendous costume themselves. (No amount of candy will fix the trauma the therapist will have to work on years from now.) As the door opens the little ones back up not knowing what to expect. Then it starts again, the oohs, aahs and aren't they cute, then it happens.....candy comes out and is dropped in their bucket. What is this, candy for me? Well alrighty then, lets go to the next house!..... A monster is created and the tradition continues. Happy Halloween!
