Jason's birthday was July 12th. Amber decided to have a party for him the following Saturday, July 16th, with a good ol' Texas fish fry. During the planning of the birthday bash, Jason mentioned to Amber, it might work out better to have the party a day earlier on the 15th. Jason convinced Amber having it on Friday would allow everyone to stay later because they wouldn't have church the next day. Little did she know that a plan was being hatched... or spawned... after all it was a fish fry.
Amber and Jason had their first date on August 15, 2009 and like starry eyed couples do, they acknowledged the 15th of every month as their day. Without anyone realizing it, Jason had changed the party date so he could propose to Amber on the 15th, their date. I'm still shocked a person of the male persuasion thought of that all by himself. The extra points Jason earned on that idea should last him at least a few months into the marriage.
While Amber was busy planning everything that goes into a party, Jason was busy planning how the proposal was going to take place and buying a ring. Jason let everyone in on the surprise and told the party-goers to each bring a birthday card for him as part of the plan.
The party day finally arrived. Jason and his dad John, were frying the fish and Amber was busy in the kitchen. Since we all knew of the surprise, there was a lot of silent communication happening among us with the meeting of eyes and the raising of eyebrows.
Jason had mentioned to me that he wanted to propose as early as possible at the party because he would be a bundles of nerves waiting for the big moment. So as the last of the fish was fried to perfection, I made the suggestion we go ahead and let everyone sing "Happy Birthday" to Jason and let him open his cards.
We all sang, Jason blew out his birthday candles and started opening his stack of cards. Amber thinking this was her chance to finish up the meal preparations, went back to her salting the french fries frenzy and getting the drinks ready. Amber, oblivious to what was waiting on her, needed to be by Jason when the moment arrived. So I told her to go stand by Jason while he was opening his cards so I could take a picture. Reluctantly she stopped what she was doing and went and posed for a couple of photos.
As soon as I stopped taking pictures, Amber started to walk off to finish what she was doing. I told her it was rude to not watch Jason open his cards and she needed to stay. With a big sigh and a rolling of the eyes, Amber stood and smiled as her soon to be fiance finished opening his birthday cards.
The stack of cards dwindled down and Jason picked up the last card. He stood up and said this card isn't for me... and handed the card to Amber. With a confused look, but still smiling, Amber opened the card. In just a few seconds Amber's face went from smiling to total shock.
As Amber raised her head from the card that read, "If I could wish for one thing for my birthday it would be for you to spend the rest of your life with me", Jason was on one knee asking, "Will you marry me?" With tears streaming down Amber's face, all we heard was, "Are you kidding me???"
Between the tears, the laughter and the cheering, Amber finally did answer Jason's question with a barely audible yes. There was applause, tears and hugs all around. Jason had actually pulled the surprise off without Amber finding out.
The 15th will forever be their day... the wedding is set for October 15, 2011. On that day Amber will not only be Jason's wife, she will be Jody's mom... and, I will be given a son-in-law and a grandson. I just love two for one deals!

That is so cool how he did that!
